. . . “grade level” is not determined by age; it is something that is individual and mutable. When I was in fourth grade I raced home jubilant with my test results, and proudly announced to my mother that I was reading at the ninth grade level. My mother sobered me up instantly. “No, you’re not,” she countered. “You’re reading at the fourth grade level for you!” That stopped me dead in my tracks, because it was true. Who knew what grade level I would be reading at when I was in ninth grade, or twelfth, or after? Why, my own level, of course!
