We discussed the work of Louise Nevelson, and examined her Sky Cathedral. We also looked at the sculpture of David Smith. First the students made stabiles, practicing construction techniques with heavy paper. Then they each selected a cardboard box frame and used found objects to create a sculpture. Found objects included buttons, broken CDs, small empty boxes, cotton swabs, old museum admission buttons, metal screws, paper clips, and more. Glue sticks, tacky glue, and twist ties were used to secure the objects.
